About This Quote

Enochian is an esoteric language, constructed by Edward Kelley in the late 1500s for use in spirit communication. The language consists of a combination of symbols, letters and words drawn from a variety of traditional European languages as well as ceremonial magic. In Enochian, the alphabet is based on the Hebrew alphabet, but certain characters are drawn from other languages as needed. In the early days of computing, programmers used programming languages such as Fortran and COBOL to create computer programs. These languages were considered to be rather rigid and limited in their abilities.

In 1967, Ken Thompson developed a new programming language named “Lisp that was intended to provide a more flexible way of writing computer programs. He also invented a new development environment called “Turing complete which allowed the programmer to write programs by simply entering them into a text file instead of having to write them one line at a time. In 1971, John Backus developed “Backus-Naur Form which was meant to be a simpler way of representing computer programs. Backus-Naur Form was a formal notation that represented the logic behind each line of code or instruction which was easy for humans to read and understand but difficult for computers to handle. In 1974, Peter J.

Wegner developed “Enochian which was an attempt at creating an easily readable language for programming computers by using some of the ideas from Backus-Naur Form and some ideas from Enochian. Wegner believed that “Enochian represented concepts reasonably well and it could make it easier for humans to program computers with ‘smart’ features and do things like recognizing and categorizing input text and processing it efficiently without making too many decisions about what should be done next or how it should be handled. Later in 1974, Ken Thompson left Bell Labs to join MIT as Professor of Computer Science and Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He quickly became concerned with the idea that “Enochian could become widely used by corporations and governments which would open up many possibilities for abuse of power by those who would see their security breached.

After some consideration, he suggested that “Enochian be changed into a more mainstream language and its features
